"Specialized File Not Found in Archive" Error When Importing Decks into Anki

Encountering errors can be frustrating, especially when you're keen to start studying with your newly created decks. If you're facing the "Specialized File Not Found in Archive" error while importing a deck exported from PDF2Anki into Anki, you're not alone. This guide provides several solutions to help you overcome this issue and get back to your studies in no time.

Ensure Anki is Updated to the Latest Version

First and foremost, make sure that your Anki is updated to the latest version. We have identified that certain versions of Anki, including but not limited to version 23.12.1, are free from this bug. Updating Anki is a straightforward process:

  1. Open Anki on your computer.

  2. Go to the main menu and select Help > Check for Updates.

  3. If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions to install the latest version.

Note: If the Check for Updates option is not available, it means you might be using an older version of Anki that doesn't support automatic updates. In this case, manually download the latest version from Anki's official website. Always ensure you're downloading from the official source to avoid any security risks.

Consider Downgrading Anki

Interestingly, downgrading Anki to a specific version that we've tested, such as 2.1.66, can also resolve this issue. Here’s how to downgrade:

  1. Visit the Anki website and navigate to the downloads section (select alternative download site below Change Notes & Older Releases)

  2. Look for the older versions archive and download version 2.1.66 or another version that you prefer.

  3. Install the downloaded version, replacing the current one. Remember to back up your Anki decks and data before proceeding.

Try Importing the Deck on a Different Device

If updating or downgrading doesn't work for you, try importing the deck on a different device, such as Anki on mobile iOS. Sometimes, the issue might be specific to the device or installation you are using.

Additional Solutions

If the above solutions do not resolve the issue, here are a few more tips to try:

  • Check the Deck File: Ensure the exported deck file from PDF2Anki is not corrupted. Try re-exporting the deck from PDF2Anki and importing it again.

  • Run Anki as Administrator (Windows): Right-click on the Anki application and select "Run as administrator." This can help resolve permission-related issues that might be causing the problem.

  • Clear Anki Cache: Sometimes, clearing the cache in Anki can resolve unexpected issues. You can do this by going to Tools > Preferences > Network > Clear Local Data.

  • Check the database: Try to go to Tools > Check Database to see if the error is resolved

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the "Specialized File Not Found in Archive" error and successfully import your deck into Anki. If you still have any issues, please contact us via the Intercom chat widget at the bottom right corner. Happy studying!
